Pecan Point is a family owned and operated farm in east central Alabama producing pecans, free range chicken eggs, grass fed beef and providing bass and bream fishing on our 30 acre managed lake. In our small commercial kitchen we produce pecan products, such as our Butter Pecan and Honey Granola sweetened with the fruits of our bee's labors, and our maple syrup sweetened Maple Nut Granola. The oats for our granola are freshly rolled just prior to cooking.
We sell pecans in-shell, cracked, or farm-shelled, processing the nuts on the farm at your order. Some of our varieties include Elliots, Stuarts, Cape Fears, and a blend we call Grower's Select. . Our family lives in the pecan orchard and we work and recreate on the farm and lake and although we are not organic growers we are very sensitive to the inputs and treatments that are used on the farm. We have forgone commodity production in the interest of family, consumer and environmental safety and providing a quality and wholesome product. The Hampstead Institute currently runs two small scale urban educational farms in Montgomery, AL. We sell our produce through a CSA, farm stands, and to local chefs. We also donate produce to local charities.
Come by one of our farm sites to see what’s growing. Hampstead Farms is located in the Hampstead neighborhood off of Taylor rd. in east Montgomery. Look for the big red barn. This farm features community beds for Hampstead residents, a working barn, production planting beds, butterfly garden, and lawn event space. We have recently added sections for beehives, in addition to a community recycling, composting, & bio-diesel program by Southern Eco. The Hampstead Institute Downtown Farm is located in the heart of downtown Montgomery . This farm opened in April 2011. It features production beds, a butterfly garden, a working windmill, and will soon be adding a children's garden, more production space, and chickens.
The Hampstead Institute is excited about community involvement. Connecting people with their food systems and educating people about how food grows is very important to us. We give farm tours and host field trips at both farm sites as well as host annual events and dinners. Community members are also encouraged to volunteer at the farms. Volunteering is a great way to learn about farming and gardening through hands on experience.

Thrash’s Berry Farm: We are a local, family-owned U-Pick Blueberry Farm, and have been chemical-free for nearly ten years. We're pretty much just blueberries, but we do have a few seedling pecans that bear small nuts in the fall, and a couple of fig trees also. We have let some wild blackberries grow, so you can pick those and add them to your blueberries!
The blueberries usually come in the second week of June, and last through July; but we've seen them come in as early as the last week of May, and as late as the third week of June. Call or email just to make sure. The figs come in in July, and the blackberries in June (but you'll have to beat the birds to those!). We plan to add strawberries to the list soon.

Red Root Herb and Vegetable Farm: Generally, our Spring/Summer CSA starts around the first of April and the fall winter season starts around the first of October. Each week you will receive a recycled cotton canvas bag containing six to seven items freshly picked and in season. Most weeks there will be a newsletter which tells about the produce you receive that week.
Located so far south we use very little in the way of season extension which helps reduce our overall environmental footprint. Well water is used for efficient irrigation.
Red Root Farm uses a long crop rotation to combat pest and disease problems. When necessary we may choose to use botanical insecticides and/or beneficial bacteria under extreme circumstances. We use cover crops as our main fertility input.
Red Root Farm is both on the forefront of cutting edge organic farming techniques and a throwback to earlier times of agricultural sustainability. Established in 2000, Red Root Farm uses exclusively organic procedures to produce a diverse array of crops including corn, peas, tomatoes, melons, peppers, sugar cane, and assorted members of the Cruciferous family. Blackberries, plums, and pecans dot the Red Root landscape. The next few years may see branching out into the production of various fruits such as figs and scuppernongs.
An emphasis on sustainability is the cornerstone of the philosophy of Red Root Farm. In keeping with the sustainability philosophy and the need for community and family farming, Red Root uses a great deal of hand labor, which also reduces the need for some machinery. Currently five acres are under production with the possibility of more to come.
Red Root is a part of a growing network of resistance to genetically modified foods and use of harmful chemical pesticides. Red Root uses agricultural techniques such as cover cropping, composting, biodynamics, and permaculture. These processes restore nutrients to the soil, nurture biodiversity, and help to create harmony in the natural world. Red Root avoids chemicals that harm the consumers of food -- as well as the environment.
Though Red Root Farm is active year-round, seeds are put into the ground during the main planting season for the southeastern Alabama climate, which include early spring, late summer, and late winter. The farm is abuzz with activity from May to December. The high points of harvest bring considerable amounts of food from the soil to farm markets, area restaurants, a special farm store located in Banks, and to the Community Supported Agriculture (CSA).
Though mainstream and popular edible vegetables make up a bulk of the crops grown at Red Root Farm, Gary Weil also brings a unique understanding of herbs and agriculture to Alabama. Among other crops produced at Red Root Farm are wheat grass, various herbs used in biodynamic agriculture, and many other hard-to-find medicinal and culinary herbs. Anyone who has used herbs knows that freshness is of the utmost importance in ensuring a quality product. Red Root Farm is interested in all aspects of environmental sustainability.
Each day of farming is a day of resistance to an often-dehumanizing mass culture that focuses only on consumerism and selfishness. Among the other projects at Red Root Farm is an attempt to explore environmental architecture. There are plans to install a living roof on an existing brick building and Red Root will explore other ways to integrate living material into daily practical uses. Education about desirable alternatives to harmful (and sometimes expensive) building and living practices is a key mission of Red Root Farm.

Whisper Wind Farm: We are a small Christian family farm located in central Alabama. We are just beginning our adventure in market gardening, but have been providing for our own family for several years. It has been a long road for us taking an abandoned 10 acre overgrown pasture to a working and producing farm. We still have a long way to go and many projects on the list. We figured we will just enjoy the journey and share it with our friends. Our goal is to provide locally grown produce to local clients. We want our clients to know where their food comes from and how it is grown. As a farming family we enjoy getting to know the folks that are eating what we grow. Our children also eat what we grow. So in that respect there are no pesticides nor herbicides. We also mix our own feed for the livestock so as to make sure there is nothing in their feed that we would not feed our own children. Sometimes this means growing our own livestock feed. We are a bit old-fashioned and look to the old ways for many of our farming practices. We look forward to hearing from you.

Over 80% of illnesses today are chronic, progressive, and degenerative. Typically, these illnesses are not acquired overnight! The pattern that causes these ailments are typically developed gradually over a long period of time. Therefore, the interventions needed to resolve them are not usually "one-time" or instantaneous activities. In addition, a "fast fix" mentality usually only addresses symptoms with a "band aid" approach, leaving the root cause of an illness ignored. At the Fontaine Center, we focus on the "root", not the "fruit" causes of disease!

The farm provides a scenic and peaceful setting for recreational family fishing.

The Hampstead Institute is a community based non-profit 501(c)(3) organization in Montgomery, Alabama which is dedicated to promoting local, sustainable farming.
